Georgina’s Bench
One empty chair.
This sculpture is designed to celebrate a life lived, while at
the same time speak of a significant loss.
Made entirely of
bronze, it consists of a solitary chair and table attached to a
circular "pool" base replicating the surface of a pond
complete with ripples
as if from a light rain. The horizontal
surfaces of the table and the surface of the chair will
duplicate the water pattern of the base. Ripples will
emanate from the furniture’s points of contact, extending
the theme of the artwork and
reminding us of the
repercussions of life and the continuous rings of influence we each have.
In order to imply youth, these objects will be
slightly reduced in scale. One leg of the chair steps beyond
the edge of the circle, perhaps about to leave, reminding us of Georgina's absence and
the uncertainty of life’s journey. On the surface of the table will be placed a single cup,or bowl, suggesting a moment interrupted.
In order to cast such a large bronze base, (almost 6') it will be divided into four
quadrants, resulting in a subtle cross, of sorts, which I feel is an
appropriate detail. Over time, the Bronze will patina to a bluegreen
colour. Ideally a garden of some sort could encompass this artwork,
further activating this area as a source of renewal, a
gathering area and a play area
for children, . . away from
the street, . . and will provide an energizing focal point on the lawn
of St. Margaret’s.
Caring Family and Friends –
It is time to start fundraising for
Georgina’s Bench – which isn’t a bench.
I wanted the campaign to be flawless,
perfect, funny, poignant, heart wrenching, colour perfect, font impeccable,
causing all who read it to throw open their wallets while wiping away tears.
This is not going to happen.
Gord Peteran, the artist, had an
inspiration and moved much faster then we had ever imagined.
So with no time to wait we are asking for
money.
